Lost

So I’ve begun to watch Lost Season 1 after many recommendations from friends and when I missed out on conversations cause I didn’t have the context. Anyway, at first I’m thinking Lost is like Jurassic Park cross Lord of the Flies. The story is somewhat interesting so far. I’ve only watched 3 episodes so far, but it’s just not addicting yet. My first complain is not enough people die. In the beginning, you had a whole bunch of people die from the plane crash. Well, that doesn’t really count since most of them were dead before the 1st episode started. I’ve counted 3 kills so far, so it averages 1 dead body per episode. 24 on the other hand had at least 10 kills per episode. The story is also not as fast pace as I would’ve imagined. Tons of flashbacks, but I guess that’s the main plot of this series, talking about each individuals story and how they ended up here on the island.

I did learn something interesting. Apparently Backgammon is the oldest known recorded game. Click on the link and you can read about its history.

I was going through Lost’s info on IMDb and following Dr. Jack’s (Matthew Fox) link, they’re apparently making Rambo IV starring Sylvester Stallone.

Random Crap:

Downloaded a preview/teaser of 秒速5センチメートル – 5 Centimeters Per Second (fansubbed by Triad). Here’s the torrent. I’ve also uploaded the video to my gallery. QuickTime had a problem playing the video in the browser, but you can download it here directly and play in your preferred video player. 5 Centimeters Per Second is Shinkai Makoto’s latest work. You might remember him from his other works such as 星の声 (The Voices of a Distant Star) or 雲のむこう、約束の場所 (The Place Promised in Our Early Days / Beyond the Clouds). The animation and soundtrack once again seems amazing. Although the preview/teaser is only 45secs, it was beautifully done. The title “5 Centimeters Per Second” refers to the rate that sakura (cherry blossoms) petals fall at. You can also visit the official movie’s site.

I’m generally not too much of a YTMND fan, but this was just too cute: Having A Bad Day? (from RayAlome). All the little puppies are so cute!

  1. There was a big fight over how to deal with the dead bodies in one of the episodes. Wild boars were coming to eat it and the stench was growing bad. I just didn’t what the big deal was with cremation. Is there really religion that forbids cremation? The fight was so bad it felt burning people was wrong and the only right thing to do was to bury them. I personally feel that there’s probably more religions that forbid burials than cremation.

  2. When you’re being chased by bees, why the heck do you rip off your shirt? If anything you’d want to keep it on to provide at least some protection from the sting.

  3. Although many sites cite that Eucalyptus Oil is a herbal remedy to asthma, it has never been proven so. What’s more interesting is the fact that a Korean lady knew about this when Eucalyptus trees are native to Australia and Malaysia (source). She also doesn’t strike me as the type of girl that would know much biology/medicine.

    According to , InteliHealth:

Eucalyptus oil has been suggested for many other uses, based on tradition or on scientific theories. However, these uses have not been thoroughly studied in humans, and there is limited scientific evidence about safety or effectiveness. Some of these suggested uses are for conditions that are potentially very serious and even life-threatening. You should consult a health care provider before using eucalyptus oil for any unproven use.

One such use refers to asthma. Neither asthma’s Wikipedia page nor Eucalyptus’s Wikipedia page mentions one another.

    From the same source above:

    Potential Dangers

    Allergies

There are several reports of allergic skin reactions occurring in people using eucalyptus oil products on their skin. Laboratory tests have shown that people with asthma or other allergies may be more likely to have a reaction to eucalyptus. An herbal survey found that 12 percent of asthmatic patients use eucalyptus. Ironically, eucalyptus may cause allergic reactions and may exacerbate asthma. It has been reported that rhinoconjunctivitis and vocal cord dysfunction worsen within minutes of an exposure to eucalyptus.

    Side Effects

Eucalyptus should not be taken by mouth unless under the careful supervision of a licensed health care professional. There have been numerous cases of toxicity with oral use, including vomiting, stomach pains, seizures, abnormal heart rhythms, bleeding, coma and death.

In animals, eucalyptus oil has been shown to lower blood sugar levels. It is not clear if these effects occur in humans.

When used on the skin, rashes and burning have been reported.

When used in baths or as aromatherapy, prolonged use has caused difficulty breathing, drowsiness and dizziness. Skin irritation has also been reported.

A strain of bacteria found on eucalyptus may cause infection. Worsening of asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis has been reported.

Cardiovascular collapse and multi-organ failure have been reported following a massive ingestion of mouthwash containing phenolic compounds (eucalyptol, menthol, thymol).

  4. So they mentioned that no one can pick the lock on a Halliburton case. I was like I’ve seen those types of cases before. Apparently they’re quite durable: In addition to being more durable than a leather or cloth case due to its rigidity, the aluminum case seals tightly against dust and water.

Also, they’re quite pricey: Although lighter, the carbon fiber briefcases cost about $2000, about seven times the cost of the standard aluminum Zero Halliburton briefcases. So even the standard aluminum cases are around $300.

  5. Learnt a new word: Charley Horse: In medical parlance, a charley horse is a painful contusion of the quadriceps muscle of the anterior thigh that commonly results in a muscular hematoma and sometimes several weeks of pain and disability.

  6. For awhile, I was always wonderng why they didn’t type the number beforehand and when the beeper came on, to hit execute so there’s no rush to type it. Then an episode later, Locke shows that you can’t begin to enter it the alarm goes off.

  7. When Desmond starts talknig about “meeting Jack in the next life”, I’m beginning to think that this might be purgatory (a state in which the souls of those who have died in grace must expiate their sins). The research facility in charge of this research is named after Dharma, which is the origin for Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. It also appears that everyone is going through flashback phases where of when they did something wrong. People either die or get taken away. Children are the most likely to get taken away and that is because they’re born without sins or don’t have enough time to accumulate sins yet and get to go to heaven immediately.

I’m not too sure what happens if you die. I’m leaning toward hell, but this is still speculation. It could be they go to heaven too, but anyway, they’re leaving purgatory.

Interestingly enough, right before Boone died, he repented on what he did to his nanny Teresa…

    Just a thought.
