So I’ve heard that 28 Days Later was one of the better zombie movies, however there are so many bad zombie movies, what does “better” really mean? The only semi-decent zombie movie I can think of was Shaun of the Dead, but that was more comedy than scary, not exactly a thriller type move if you get what I’m trying to say. Anyway, I saw the trailer for 28 Weeks Later and decided I’d go and watch 28 Days Later just to see how it was. It turned out rather good. The storyline flowed rather well and with most zombie movies, you’re thinking what the heck happened to the rest of the world, but this one answers it to some extent. Also these zombies aren’t dumb like most of the just walking very slowly saying “brain…”; these zombies actually are smart, can run, climb, open doors, etc.

The movie begins with premise that scientists were testing some virus in monkeys. I believed he called it “rage”. Anyway, some people I believe representing a PETA-like group tries and free these monkeys and the virus spreads.
The story resumes 28 days later when Jim at the hospital wakes up from a coma. He walks out and the whole hospital is deserted, not a single soul. He walks around town (in the middle of London) and there’s not a single person during broad daylight. He ends up at a church and meets the “infected” for the 1st time. For some reason, his instincts told him to whack the priest and run.
He meets Selena and Mark later on as there first not-infected people. I keep thinking that Mark’s death was due to Jim, but I’m not too sure anymore. Would the infected have come if Jim didn’t light any candles?
Anyway, the story moves on where they meet Frank and Hannah, father and daughter, who have been able to intercept a radio message telling them that they’ve found the cure in Manchester.
Frank had a taxi and they were able to drive off. I really like the fact that they could go into a supermarket and just grab whatever they want. It reminds me of those cart sprees where you have 30 seconds to grab as much as you can off the shelf and if you make it back in time, you get all the items for free. However, in this case, there was no time limit.
The story continues and they reach Manchester only to find it deserted too. However, Frank accidentally gets infected and soldiers pop out and kill him. If only they had come sooner, Frank wouldn’t have to die.
You later find out that the “cure” isn’t really what you would’ve imagined. The cure was to start civilization again. They had a fort and surrounded it with land mines and sirens and flood lights. You also learnt that they need women to restart civilization and that’s why they started broadcasting the radio message. As you get to know these soldiers more and more, you start to find them sick and demented. There was one reasonable guy, but they executed him. They were also about to execute Jim, but he managed to get away and started this retaliation all by himself. Makes me wonder what type of boy scout he was (since I believe that’s what he said his job was).
Jim, Selena, and Hannah managed to escape while letting the infected kill off all the soldiers. Jim saw a plane earlier on and they started to sew a bunch of fabric together to form the word HELLO. Inside Jim’s dream, I saw the word HELL, and as Hannah started spreading them fabric around, I thought they were going to spell HELP. Hello is just as good I suppose, and it does contain the word hell which made that blink of a second much more memorable.
