Welcome to the NHK!

So I finished watching Welcome to the NHK recently and it was just PURE AWESOME!

welcome to the nhkwelcome to the nhkwelcome to the nhk

Based on the covers, if you think the anime is porn or hentai, you’ll be highly disappointed. That’s what I thought at first, but it wasn’t until Tera told me that Welcome to the NHK and Mushi-shi were the best 2 animes of 2007, that got me interested. Mushi-shi is another awesome anime which I haven’t had time to post my review yet. Looking around, it appears that Welcome to the NHK is about a NEET (not in education, employment or training) who is a hermit that hides in his apartment all day long. Somewhere down the line, he has come to the conclusion that there’s an organization called N.H.K. (basically the TV station’s name) that has a conspiracy to create hermits/NEETs and has sworn to take it down.

That was my assumption of the anime before I began watching it and boy was the anime SO MUCH MORE!

I’m going to take a step back and give you a little introduction that CrimsonAngel told me over my vacation. By the way, he got me this really cute deer (Japanese shrine charm), which I originally thought was a reindeer:
japanese shrine charm - deer

Back to CrimsonAngel, he’s currently doing his Masters in Japan and he did an essay on Otakus/Hikikomoris. Today, most Americans think otakus are people into anime, while other some people whole know a bit more assumes that otakus are hobbyists. However did you know the phrase お宅 (otaku) originally was a term used to mean you (honorific), your house, your home, your family? Later on, since the term could mean your home/house, it began to refer to people who would stay home all the time. His story continues with some serial killer loose in Japan and proclaimed himself to be an otaku. Even though the serial killer was caught, the term otaku had a very bad connotation associated to it and it wasn’t until recently when it became popular again. Nowadays, オタク (otaku) can refer to geeks, nerds, enthusiasts, basically someone who is very into something, and are most likely introverts or at least not very sociable.

The other term is 引きこもり (hikikmori) which means a shut-in, a stay-at-home, or people who withdraw from society. I’ve used the term hermit as I believe that’s our slang for it. Anyway, the story is about Satou, a hermit and how he overcomes hikikomori ways (oh, did I just ruin the ending?). He was a college dropout and after he was expelled from college, he basically became a hermit, living off what his parents transfered into his bank account every month. Misaki, the main female character appears soon with the intention of helping Satou get rid of his hikikomori ways. However, you learn very little of Misaki, but you can feel that her past is very painful. At first Satou of course denies he’s a hikikomori, but the first step to fix a problem is of course accepting the fact you have a problem.

The anime has it’s light moments, poking fun at the otaku/hikikomori culture, while it does have it’s very dark and deep moments that question the purpose of life itself, why do hikikomoris fear, how people get lost in fantasy role playing games (mmorpgs), how a child’s upbringing affects their view on life, why people commit suicide and what goes through their mind, etc.

Speaking of suicide, you’ve probably heard that it’s quite common for Japanese people to jump in front of trains to commit suicide. And you’ve probably heard that Japanese trains are really packed. Imagine the train conductor taking one of those riot shields and pushing people into the train. That’s how pack it is. Anyway, when someone kills themselves in front of a train, this causes major delays and problems on an already overloaded transportation system. Imagine thousands or ten thousands of people getting delayed 30mins because of your stunt. That’s a lot of lost time. That’s a lot of lost money. The train company will then send your parents a letter saying they’re sorry for your lost and a BILL for the damage/delay you’ve caused. Just imagine that! I’m not saying it’s a bad or good system. Someone has to be held accountable for it and I don’t blame the train company for holding the parents responsible.

Anyway, back to the anime. The story goes on as Misaki tries to help Satou, but curing hikikomori isn’t an overnight thing and it takes a lot of patience and I applaud Misaki for sticking it in there. However, it’s when you learn of Misaki’s true past, where you feel a very deep sadness and why she is trying to help Satou so much. Satou of course takes Misaki for granted. One thing you have to realize that is a hikikomori lifestyle isn’t sustainable without outside support, but getting a hikikomori to adapt to society is a very difficult task. All in all, I have to say Welcome to the NHK is a very touching roller coaster ride.

ukms[z] – Reflections

So I was cleaning out my downloads folder and I found an anime music video that Artemyst had shared with me awhile back and I wanted to share it with you guys.

It’s titled Reflections by ukms[z]:

ukms[z] - reflections
(DivX/Stage6 mirror)

This AMV was first submitted to AKROSS, which I’m assuming is a Russian anime convention. It actually won quite a few awards.

The music video features scenes from Haibane Renmei and Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien. I’ve never watched Haibane Renmei, but if anyone out there recommends it (or not), please do tell. I watched Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien recently (also called Rumbling Hearts) and it was rather heart wretching to watch due to the love triangle.

Then there was the music, which was just awesome! After digging around and as some of the text suggested, the song is indeed Russian. The song is by Maksim, titled Do You Know? You can watch the music video on YouTube.

Belldandy asked if there was a version with the lyrics translated available, and searching on YouTube, I found: Reflections (HR) (Subtitled). I expected the lyrics to somewhat suck, but I was surprised. The lyrics actually matched and watching the video with the lyrics translated made me look at the video in a completely different angle.

Cowbell Hero

Got this from Digg: Cowbell Hero

That was just so awesome I had to show it to you guys. It’s a parody on Guitar Hero, but instead of a guitar being the instrument, you’re playing a cowbell. If you haven’t seen the SNL skit on this, here it is: More Cowbell! As Christopher Walken says, “Guess what! I’ve got a fever. And the only prescription is more cowbell.

The original song was of course Blue Oyster Cult – Don’t Fear The Reaper.

Apparently this clip was taken from AMV Hell 4. I’ll see if I can get a better quality clip and share it. AMV stands for anime music video. The anime this is from is Azumanga Daioh (あずまんが大王). The one banging the pan is Kasuga Ayumu and the one in bed is Yukari sensei (confirmed with Artemyst).

The Cowbell Hero logo appears to be taken from a T-Shirt logo designed by SplitReason: Cowbell Hero T-Shirt

While searching for the SNL skit, I found this: GH2 Custom – Don’t Fear the Reaper 5* (Better). Someone had actually made a custom Guitar Hero 2 track. Sometimes in the background, you see a guy clapping, which at first I thought was someone banging a cowbell.

Update:
I managed to rip a higher quality version:

cowbell hero

Enjoy!

組曲『ニコニコ動画』 – Kumikyoku [Nico Nico Douga]

There’s been a song/video that’s been spreading across the net like wildfire: 組曲『ニコニコ動画』 – Kumikyoku [Nico Nico Douga]

組曲 (Kumikyoku) literally translates to medley/musical suite. ニコニコ動画 (Nico Nico Douga) is the name of a site: nicovideo.jp, a YouTube like video sharing site, but mainly for Japanese people. Unfortunately, to access anything on that site, it requires you to register/login, and the process isn’t that simple for someone who doesn’t understand Japanese. Several of the videos I posted recently were pulled from there and uploaded to my gallery.

Anyway, here’s what I believe the original is: 組曲『ニコニコ動画』動画Ver., where the music is just synthesized and the animation playing matches the song that is currently played.

Here you have a full orchestra and choir (100 people) performing the song: 合唱 組曲「ニコニコ動画」グランドフィナーレ. If you want this song, you can listen/download it in mp3 format: 組曲『ニコニコ動画』SP-Edision_feat.ミク.mp3

Angelus shared this with me today:
Kumikyoku [Nico Nico Douga]
組曲『ニコニコ動画』 psychoがちょっと弾いて歌ってみた

The guy singing it does a pretty good job and it reminded me of the guy who sings at the end of Lucky Star.

Here you have a group of 258 Taiwan college students singing in the lecture hall: せっかくだから台湾人258人で一緒に組曲『ニコニコ動画』を歌ってみた! Do remember this song is completely in Japanese and Taiwan student’s native language is Mandarin/Taiwanese.

People have mixed it with different animations and added lyrics to the song. You can view most of them on YouTube.

According to 合唱 組曲『ニコニコ動画』 featuring 初音ミク Special-Edition Ver.ニコニコ動画コメント付, this is the list of songs featured in the medley in order:

Jan Lyk’s Halloween Party

A few weeks ago, I get an evite from Jan Lyk for his Halloween Party. I wasn’t sure if I was going or not at first, since I’m not a big fan of getting dressed up in a costume. The last time I got dressed up was probably back in elementary school. I’ve never really been a big fan of Halloween. And after I found out I could buy my own candy, there was even less reason so. I remember when I was small, my mom would throw away about half my candies I got from Trick-or-Treating as she deemed them “poisonable.”

Anyway, back to the story. Not sure to accept or reject the invite yet, we got into a discussion of Xyon’s costume one day and somehow I verbally agreed to going to the party. The reason I provided for not accepting the invite yet was I wasn’t sure how many guests I’ll bring and pulled a Mechy/Horacio reason saying I wasn’t sure how many of my 10 different “female” friends were going to be available that night.

Now a verbal agreement is not binding, but neither is an evite confirmation, but since I already agreed to go, I started thinking of costumes. A bunch of anime characters pop up into my mind. First of course it was Kenshin, but his costume felt hard to come by. I then thought everyone says I look like Tenchi Muyo with my tail:
tenchi muyo

However, Tenchi’s costume is just a regular high school student. I thought maybe I can get a traditional Japanese high school uniform (the black ones actually looks pretty awesome), but there wasn’t really enough time to have one shipped and I had no idea where to pick one up locally.

So I started expanding my options beyond anime. I looked up a few costume shops around me to see if there were anything I liked. While I was in the first costume store, I saw a black jacket and thought it be pretty easy to dress up as Neo from The Matrix. All I would really need is a leather trench coat and some shades, though shades would make it difficult to navigate in a dark Halloween party. Anyway, after I dropped by a few other costume shops and didn’t really see anything I wanted, I went to Ross. Unfortunately, they said trench coats were seasonal things and if it’s not in the coats section, then they probably wouldn’t have it. The same thing happened at Target.

During sushi dinner that night with Stanman, Desperajo, and Carolynn, I brought up the fact that I was looking for a trench coat for my costume. Desperajo mentioned that he saw a really nice trench coat at Goodwill and I decided I would try checking there. Given it was Goodwill, it’ll probably not cost too much either. So the conversation of what you would dress up as for Halloween went around and Stanman said he’d dress up as Hiro from Heroes. I asked if he meant future Hiro, but Stanman declined and said he’d just be regular Hiro, the present day version. We all said that wasn’t really a costume as he just dresses normally with fuzzy hair. He goes, that’s fine with him. Carolynn then chimed in that I would look more like Hiro than Stanman, and Stanman argues that both he and I look pretty much the same, and I have to agree. We often get confused which Wii Miis is who.

Anyway, that gave me another idea: Future Hiro. I searched online to see if I can find a good picture of it and found this:
future hiro

I thought awesome! Looks like I’ll need a black coat, a black fleece with zipper, black dress shirt, black pants, black shoes, a sword, and a black strap to hold the sword’s sheath. If you haven’t realized, black is one of my favorite colors, though some will argue that black is not a color at all, and is the absence of color, and to those I would just ignore.

Anyway, I started searching my wardrobe and it looks like I have the dress shirt and pants. I know I have a pair of black dress shoes, so that was taken care of also. I dug around all my laptop bags and found a few black straps that look like they’ll work. Looks like I’ll need to invest in a black coat, black fleece, and a sword for this endeavor.

I drop by Ross again and found a few black coats and fleeces and tried them on. I ended up purchasing one of each. However, when I got home and tried all 3 layers of clothing on (coat + fleece + dress shirt), it got unbearably hot, so I decided I didn’t really need the fleece and ended up returning it to Ross.

I also dropped by a party store and picked up a toy sword. I was thinking of bringing my real katana, but the thought of accidents turned me away. After I got home, I cut out some holes and attached the black strap to it. When I discussed my costume with Xyon, he insisted that I would need the symbol on my sword. So I ended up picking up a metallic gold marker from Office Depot and that worked out extremely well:
takezo kensei swordtakezo kensei sword

Here’s the total cost of my costume:
Black Coat: $50
Toy Sword: $6
Gold Marker: $3

And here’s the final outcome of the costume:
future hiro costume

Anyway, just as I was about to leave for the party, I realized that I couldn’t find my black dress shoes. Tons of scenarios came into my mind. Did I take it back to LA during my last visit and forgot to bring it back? Did my mom hide them somewhere else? Has it always been in storage? I decided to give my mom a call and two rings in while I was searching the storage, I found it! I recalled the last time I wore these was during the CSD Christmas Party almost 2 years ago. I recall even buying a belt and tie for that event, which I haven’t worn once since. Anyway, it turns out that it was indeed still in storage (there’s still tons of boxes I have yet to open since my move).

So I drove to Microsoft because Xyon and I were carpooling from there. Turns out a few others were doing the same. We met up with Veneta, Thet, and Aurash. We got to Jan Lyk’s place around 9 and people started slowly coming in.

How the party went? I’ll let the pictures tell the story:

For the full album, check out: Jan Lyk’s Halloween Party 2007

One really funny incident that happened during the party was people were guessing what time it was. I looked at my clock on my cell phone and saw 1:47am. I thought, wasn’t it 1:30am almost an hour ago? Then it hit me, Daylight Savings Time. So while people were guessing 2:30, 2:42, etc, I couldn’t help but laugh. When I told them it was only 1:47, they wouldn’t believe me until I mentioned DST, then it hit them. Aurash continues to argue that his clock is synched with the atomic clocks and his clock shows 2:47am. Jeremy backs me up and says his phone has synched and updated with DST.

Here’s some helpful advise: Don’t try to bite or bend those glowy sticks beyond their capacity. I ended up with a mouth full of glowing orange liquid which tasted really really bad.

After the party, a bunch of us went to Denny’s and just chatted for quite a bit.

New Title Image

So if you haven’t noticed, I’ve updated my title image. It originally featured Detective Conan and Shinichi in the background with the saying “Krunk4Ever! It’s the only truth.” You can still see the previous title image here. However, while updating to WordPress 2.3 and having to fix up all the stylesheets and theme changes, I got bored and decided to make a new title image.

I started searching for more Detective Conan images, but didn’t really find one that I liked or could work with. Then I searched for Rurouni Kenshin, Bleach, and Naruto. I found a Naruto one that I liked and even created a title image that was on my site for a few hours. If you didn’t get to see it, you can check it out here. It was going to say “Krunk4Ever! Some anger just can’t be quelled.” It looked pretty decent, but I decided to see what other options there was.

I also got to a point where I wanted to have a black and white title image, basically a silhouette type image (think iPod commercials). I was playing with at few images and after I converted them to silhouettes, they looked nothing like the original, so I gave up on that idea.

While browsing for more images, I ended up on this page: Ginko, the snow, the tree, and the Mushi and immediately overtaken with a very peaceful and calm feeling. The image is from an anime called Mushi-Shi (蟲師) which literally translates to bug master, but according to BasuGasuBakuhatsu:

The literal translation for “Mushi-shi” sounds sorta like “Bug Tamer,” but I think the actual meaning is a bit more interesting. At least, if you’re not into entomology…

Mushishi are not bugs. They’re actually pseudo life-forms that were around before life even existed. They usually can’t be seen, but their effects on people can be pretty strong. Ginko, a “Mushi-shi,” travels the world ridding people of their Mushi afflictions and learning more about them. Aaaand that’s about it.

I haven’t checked out this anime yet, but it has a pretty high rating on AniDB. Looks like something to add to my watch list. House, M.D. is once again postponed until further noticed.

Anyway, back to the topic. I first created this one, which following the previous title images, had a white border. However Hjo3 noted that the white borders were a bit weird given the fact that the new image also had a white border, so I decided to give moving the trees to the edge a try and came up with what I have now. It turned out pretty nice. I’m not sure which one is better, but I’ll leave this one for now. Since there was this little man walking, I decided to make up some saying dealing with “journey”, and ended up with “Krunk4Ever! A journey of amazing experiences.”

みなみけ / minami-ke

So Skylancer just recommended a new anime to me and it’s AWESOME! The anime is called みなみけ (minami-ke). The anime is just super cute. It reminds me of あずまんが大王 (Azumanga Daioh), but a lot wackier. The story is about 3 sisters, one in elementary school, one in high school, and one which I assume is in college. The story is about everyday life, but don’t let that steer you away. That’s like saying Azumanga Daioh was just about a group of high school girls. The situations are wacky and hilarious, and add to that the cuteness to it. It’s not clear what happened to their parents nor why they live in such a big house, but as long as it keeps me entertained, I’m not complaining. As FuzzyWuzzy says, “wow that’s so sickeningly cute.”

You can check out the OP (opening) on YouTube / Stage6 and the ED (ending) on YouTube / Stage6. Trust me, the OP and ED aren’t enough to warn you how awesome the 1st episode is. I did realize something strange about the YouTube videos which were labeled “High Quality”. I mean they were indeed a lot higher quality than the other YouTube videos which I found and not over compressed like the others. However, it does show a play time of 10 minutes, which in reality is really just 1:30. I wonder how they did it… how they took up 10 minutes worth of space/quality to make a video have higher quality on YouTube.

Speaking of which, the 2nd episode of Clannad was released and boy am I addicted to the ending song: だんご大家族 (Dango Daikazoku). I’ve almost completely memorized it. I’ve sang along at least 2 or 3 dozen times. You know you’re addicted to the song when you’re singing it in the shower. The dangos did appear in the 2nd episode and it turns out to be one of the girl’s favorite things. It used to be popular in “anime” history, but has since died off like Furby and the Power Rangers. I can’t find anything that shows that it was popular in real Japan history. Usually, I don’t really try to learn a Japanese song, due to the fact that they sing a lot faster than I can. I can shout some phrases here and there, but ultimately end up laughing at myself. However, Dango Daikazoku was meant for little kids and sung at really slow pace, so it was quite easy to catch on.

思い出は億千万 (110 Million Memories)

So I first heard this song in the Piano Medley I posted a week ago. At that time I thought it was just one of the Megaman theme songs. However, recently I watched a random video which actually gave the song lyrics! I was like… lyrics for Megaman theme song!?!?!

Digging further, I found out the song is called 思い出は億千万 (omoide ha okkusenman). It’s sometimes shorten to just 億千万 (okkusenman). The title translates to 110 Million Memories and I’ve been listening to the song over and over again. If you’re interested, you can download the song: okkusenman.mp3 (from Hardcore Mix with ゴム). If you get a weird Japanese Yahoo! page when trying to download the mp3, that just means the allocated bandwidth for that day has been used up, so try again later.

It appears multiple bands have played this as a cover song. It also appears there’s been several iterations of this song posted YouTube, the first being: ロックマン2 おっくせんまん ~ Hardcore Mix with ゴム ~ where they used video taken from the Rockman 2 (Megaman 2) game.

Later on, someone actually animated the song based on the lyrics, which really doesn’t have anything to do with Rockman/Megaman. If anything, it’d be Ultraman since that’s apparently the boy’s childhood hero. You can check out the new animation here: おもいではおっくせんまん(ボーカル有り)

I wanted to find out what the song was about. I got the jist of it, but my Japanese isn’t all the great and I didn’t want to search phrase by phrase. I found the translation here: OKKUSENMAN: MEMORIES ARE BILLIONS, but what was even better was the fact they linked to a video where the video had English subtitles: My Memories are 110 Million Music Video.

After watching the video for probably the 15th time, I’ve began to feel nostalgic. The song is about how when you were a kid, anything was possible, including becoming Ultraman (a children’s TV superhero). You don’t care how others see you, even when you run around acting silly playing Ultraman. As you grow up, you become more and more aware of how you others view you and become restricted in what you do. Friends go off in their own paths and soon you’re doing the same thing day in and day out.

It’s very sad and I miss those childhood days. When I was small, I’d have this imaginary kingdom, where I was the emperor. I was master ninja/swordsman and had millions of people under my command. I would play sword fights with imaginary enemies who were very skilled. Often times, my sword and weapons would be imaginary too, so you’d see a little me running around the house kicking and punching. I’m surprised I didn’t break anything… or did I? Those were the days, very fun. Unfortunately, with imaginary kingdoms, it’s hard to invite friends or siblings to join, as their vision of the imaginary kingdom differs from your own.

But those days are over… sigh…

Cute Aruruu

As promised, I’ve been ripping the cute scenes from Utawarerumono with Aruruu in it. Here’s just a handful from the 1st 10 episodes.

Utawarerumono - Baby MukkuruUtawarerumono - Hungry MukkuruUtawarerumono - Aruruu Saves HakuoroUtawarerumono - Villagers Leave After BattleUtawarerumono - Kamyu Befriends AruruuUtawarerumono - Aruruu Wants To Go To BattleUtawarerumono - Aruruu's Necklace

Isn’t she adorable?

I didn’t bother with the low resolutions, most likely because I was lazy, but 5-15MB videos shouldn’t be too bad for those who visit my site.

だんご大家族 (Dango Daikazoku)

So I started watching a new anime called Clannad recommended to me by Belldandy. Story feels very similar to Kanon and Air, but I’ve only watched one episode so far. Pretty good.

Clannad’s ED (ending song/animation) was so cute, I almost melted: (high resolution and low resolution respectively)
clannad ed - dango daikazoku clannad ed - dango daikazoku

The song is called だんご大家族 (Dango Daikazoku), which translates to big dango family. Dango is usually translated to dumpling, but it’s not the dumpling you typically think about. When I think of dumplings, I usually think of 餃子 (jiao zi in Chinese or gyoza in Japanese). Dango’s are more like mochi, but not as soft. You can read more about them on Wikipedia. Here’s a picture of what a dango looks like:
