Haloid

Someone from MS newsgroup sent out a link to this video: Haloid. It’s actually a really cool video showing a battle between Master Chief (from Halo) and Samus (from Metroid) and tons of those alien guys from Halo. The main battle music was from The Matrix where Neo battles a gazillion Agent Smiths. He even incorporated the spinning in a circle kick scene. The animation was done really well as well as the choreography. Unfortunately, even I knew Master Chief is suppose to be a guy. But I guess that gives it a twist. Oh, did I just spoil it for you? ;p

Artemyst wanted to download it, but GameTrailers didn’t make it easy. There was no direct download link and the actual location of the flv file was hidden since they call their flash movie viewer with an id, which goes and looks up the url in the background. However, nothing escapes Ethereal. I ended up getting this ip: 207.226.113.35 and this location: /gt_fanmovies/um_31603-91737-HaloidFull-1176793690.flv. However, apparently their movies are on a shared server and 207.226.113.35 resolves to 207-226-113-35.pccwglobal.net which gives me a 404 when I try to open the link.

However, Ethereal apparently also captures DNS lookups and the DNS lookup that resolved to 207.226.113.35 was trailers.gametrailers.com.

So if you want to download Haloid to watch on your own computer outside a browser, you can do so by downloading: Haloid flv file.

Do note, you’ll need a FLV player to watch this. VLC Media Player and Media Player Classic both support it natively I believe, or maybe I had to install ffdshow to get the flv codec.

First of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY CDMCC!!!

Watch this water freeze instantly. This product will revolutionize shaved ice. (from Digg) – Honestly, I don’t really believe that’s just water. The 2 things that affect the physical state of water are temperature and pressure (if you remember that graph) and there’s a point where all 3 actually ~~meat~~ meet (a temperature and pressure where water is constantly changing between solid, liquid, and gas). However, a plastic water bottle doesn’t have enough strength to withstand the pressure needed to achieve what’s he’s trying to do, so my guess is something else must’ve been added. Also, after becoming ice for a bit, it pretty much changes back to liquid rather quickly. It actually reminds me of the supersaturation experiments we did back in high school chemistry.

Vertical Sitting Car (from Digg) – Is this satellite image on Google Maps showing that a car is parked vertically in the City of The Hague (Den Haag) in Netherlands? Or is it just optical illusion?

Great examples of Guerilla Marketing (from Digg) – I recently bought a book about guerilla marketing and it makes great reading. I love the idea of coming up with a truly unique idea for very little cash and turning any exposure you do get into sales. Funny or Die (from Ars) – Comedian Will Ferrell and partner Adam McKay quietly launched their newest contribution to the pool of ever-growing video sites last week, called FunnyorDie.com, which allows users to upload their own comedy videos to the site to be voted on by other viewers. FunnyorDie functions more or less like the other video sites already in existence, except with one key difference: the votes determine whether the videos stay on the main site, where they are categorized, or whether they get banished to “The Crypt.”

Only 244 copies of Genuine Windows Vista sold in China (from /.) – Microsoft spent millions of dollars advertising its next generation OS ‘Windows Vista’ in China, in fact the IT juggernaut threw up the biggest Vista Ad on the 421 meter high Jin Mao tower in Shanghai China. However after 2 weeks (Jan 19 to Feb 2) from launch Microsoft managed to sell a mere 244 copies of Windows Vista. Software piracy is rampant in the middle kingdom and a pirated version of Vista sells for a mere $1 on the streets. The following numbers are quoted by Windows Vista chief distributor in Bejing.

First, as mentioned earlier, The Washington Post article referenced by Thompson has since been edited to remove any references to Counterstrike and any other video game. Second, while Microsoft did publish the Xbox version of Counterstrike, the game was originally developed by Valve Software, with Vivendi Universal handling the publication of the game on the PC.

WaPo writer talks VT shooter/Counter-Strike connection, removal (from FuzzyWuzzy) – Apparently the mention of Counter Strike was from Washington Post and friends mentioned they saw him playing at a cybercafe. I’m assuming it’s a PC version since most cybercafes do PCs and CounterStrike is really a PC game. Roommates in college said they never recall him playing video games on his computer.

Superman actually appears in this video, as well as Wonder Woman, Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Cat Woman, etc.

TypingMania 4 (from FuzzyWuzzy) – Remember Typing of the Dead game, where you have to type fast enough for your gun to kill the Zombies. Well, this game is similar where you have to type the romanji or words of these songs. Extremely difficult.

Building houses 2 (from Hjo3) – The idea is to build up the solid shape indicated by the views to the left – but only using the number of cubes given. There are 10 problems, called figuur1 to figuur10. Be warned: they are not easy. The only one I didn’t get was figure 1. Hjo3 showed me the answer later. The color coding is a bit confusing. Green means you’ve satisfied the top/front/right diagrams, but you’re still using too many blocks. When it turns yellow, it means you’ve solved it with the minimum number of blocks.

Jishaku – Telephone Club – Japanese comedy skit performed by the duo Jishaku (magnet). Taken from the TV show “Enta no Kamisama”. Subtitled in English for the benefit of foreign audiences. The translation notes can also be viewed on this page: ハッピー・エープリル・フールズ・デイ . A very hilarious skit revolves around a telephone club. A “Telephone Club” is a sort of telephone dating network. Guys pay to enter a booth and wait for who want to hook up to call in. Google “Telekura” for more details if you’re curious. China restaurant forks out $75,000 for lucky fish – A Chinese restaurant has paid $75,000 for a giant golden-coloured tiger fish, a symbol of wealth and good fortune, state media said on Tuesday. Pixelator is an unauthorized on-going video art performance collaboration with the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority, Clear Channel Communications, and its selected artists.

Since 2003, the MTA has made available for exhibition purposes 80 LED screens located at subway entrances across New York City. Unfortunately, the high cost of exhibiting (an estimated $274,000 per month per screen) prevents most artists from having access to these facilities. While the MTA’s effort to create more opportunities for video art exhibition in public spaces is to be commended, selected works remain wholly fixated on commercial goods and media conglomerate events, a short-sighted curatorial choice that regrettably ignores the full potential of these promising exhibition spaces.

In an attempt to broaden the scope of MTA’s video art series, Pixelator takes video pieces currently on display and diffuses them into a pleasant array of 45 blinking, color-changing squares. Since the project is an anonymous collaboration, the resulting video is almost entirely unplanned and unanticipated, with the original artists helping to create new works of art without any knowledge of their participation.

Crisping Tray

Once again, it’s been a long week. My random crap has already been backlogged to 3/28. I haven’t even check Digg ~~and~~ in 3 days. It’s going to take me awhile for me to push this crap onto you guys. ;p

A few weeks ago, IRobertI IMed me asking what the those gray disks that microwavable pizza come with are called. I had always thought they were just just paper cardboard with some plastic/wax thing on top of it. He tells me if you try microwaving a pizza normally without this special cardboard, the pizza’s crust becomes all soggy. I ~~think~~ then propose the fact that since most of these dishes allow air to go underneath it, that may have something to do with making it crispy.

Here’s what one of them look like:

I started searching online and there’s a bunch of threads and patents that popped up, but nothing really that describe how it works. Some claim there’s some sort of metal in it and it acts as a resistor, heating up when microwave frequencies hit it. But isn’t putting metal into the microwave counterintuitive? Anyway, I started reading the back of my Bagel Bites box and they refer to it as a crisping tray.

I decided to take apart one and unless the gray coating on top of cardboard is the metallic part, I found ~~now~~ no evidence of any sort of metal hidden inside the cardboard. If anyone knows exactly how this magic is done, I’d like to know.

Japanese goldfish live in (and clean) a deep fryer (from Consumerist) – More here: Deep-fry diving for goldfish in Japan. Someone commented: Unfortunately they don’t really explain well enough to understand well. But there is a cooling system between the water and the oil. It took them ten years to develop it. So the bits of tempura batter fall down and stick together, which keeps the oil clean (the bits don’t float around and burn). Also, if you throw frozen pieces of food into a fryer, usually the oil will react violently, but now the waters sinks and cools instead of becoming vapor.

Google Maps – from Chicago, IL to London, UK (Consumerist) – If you take a look at step #20: Swim across the Atlantic Ocean 3,462 mi. Appears to be some sort of joke that the developers decided to add in. The minimal amount of driving directions come from Boston, MA to Le Havre, France, which still results in a 29 day swim. At 3,426mi in 29 days, we’re still talking about 119 miles per day and 5 miles an hour (non-stop). Programatically, all they had to do was connect Boston to Le Havre in their map and give it a distance and time. Therefore, any location that’s connected into the USA can reach any destination that’s connected into France. Unfortunately, Mexico doesn’t have any maps on Google, so Central and South America are basically cut from this. And it looks like only Western Europe can connect into France.

First of all, I apologize for the lack of posting. It’s been a busy week at work and I haven’t been getting that much sleep, coming home around 11pm-1am. Even had to go into work today for a few hours to finish testing some stuff.

360’s Guitar Hero II guitar works in Windows, Frets on Fire – The USB-equipped X-plorer guitar that ships with the just-released Guitar Hero II for Xbox 360 has some interesting tricks up its nonexistant but metaphorically convenient sleeve. No, we’re not talking about breaking or shape-shifting (sheesh) — we’re talking about things like effects pedals and oh, what’s this, Windows support? Randy tipped us off that the guitar controller works in Windows Vista, but we had to check for ourself. The above image was captured in Windows XP. The five frets control the first five buttons, Back and Start control buttons 7 and 8, the d-pad and strummer control the Point of View Hat, the whammy bar controls the X Rotation, Star Power controls the Y Rotation, and the Z Axis sorta just wiggles when you move the guitar. The X Axis / Y Axis does nothing (gotta save something for that effects pedal, no?). Sweet! I can’t wait for the wireless version to come out now so I can play Frets on Fire with a wireless guitar on my Vista box.

Stanman’s Birthday

So yesterday, we celebrated Stanman’s birthday. We first had dinner at this really good Korean BBQ place up in Shoreline. At first, we wanted to actually do the BBQ ourselves, but the choices were limited and we had to sit separately because the BBQ tables only hold about 6 people, 7 max, and we had 10. We scrapped that idea and let them do the BBQ for us and got some really fun and interesting dishes that had short ribs, beef, calamari, spicy pork, seafood tofu soup, and a seafood pancakes. Yum… Shoot, I’m getting hungry at 3am. Not good.

Then we came back to my place to play games. Originally we had hoped to link 2 Xbox 360 consoles and play a LAN game with 8 people. I had suggested Call of Duty 2 as it was a new game I had acquired and the back of the box shows System Link 2-16 players. On a single console, you can have 1-4 players on a split screen, so we thought with 2 consoles, we can have upto 8 players. Stanman even went out to rent Call of Duty 2 for this. Boy was I wrong about System Link mode in Call of Duty 2.

First, I’ve never really linked 2 or more consoles together. If I recall correctly, they required a special cable to connect multiple systems together back in the days of SNES and N64. However, there was no such port on the Xbox 360, so the only thing that I could fathom that connect connect these 2 Xbox 360s was via the network. I connected both Xbox 360s onto my network and they were able to see each other, which was pretty cool.

Then I tried to create a game for the other console to join, however was unable to figure out how to do add more than one player on that particular console. I can go back and go to split screen mode which would allow 4 players on that console. Being stumped, I went online to search for how to get this to work. Apparently in System Link mode, you can only have 1 player on the console. Many people on the forums and threads have already shown disappointment with this limit. So in other words, in order to have 16 players in System Link mode, you would need 16 separate consoles. Ouch!

We wanted all 8 people to be playing at the same time, so we tried to come up with another game to play. If you’re wondering if I have 2 TVs, not really. Some of us would end up using my Dell 24″ LCD, which I’ve been using for my Xbox 360 before I got my new Vizio 47″ LCDTV. Stanman recalled they were able to play Halo 2 with multiple players on the console and linked to other consoles at PAX (Penny Arcade Expo). So to confirm this, I did a search online and found: How to play a system link game in Halo 2 on an original Xbox console and on an Xbox 360 console

When you use an Ethernet hub, you can have any one of the following 16-player combinations:

16 players who are using 16 consoles (one player per console)

16 players who are using eight consoles (two players per console)

16 players who are using four consoles (four players per console)

Neat! I had a copy of Halo 2 and there was a Blockbuster about 5 minute drive from me. We were pretty sure a game like Halo 2 would probably be available at Blockbuster so we drove over. We did a search on the shelves and didn’t find it. We then asked the cashier and it turns out they don’t even have an entry for it in their systems anymore. How can you not carry such a popular game!?!? We drove back disappointed and just split up the people to play at the different consoles.

After multiple rounds of Call of Duty 2, which is really fun game, we swapped to Top Spin 2, a tennis game I had also recently acquired.

Someone then suggested poker and we played a couple hours of that. It was tournament style and the buy-in was $2. I actually ended up winning, though it was a close game between Chris and I. We were both conservative players and basically when it came down to the two of us, we were just swapping blinds back and forth. The game ended with me having trip 2s and he having a pair of As. I ended up winning $8 ($10 total including my buy-in).

While the poker game was going on and people were dropping out, people started to watch Talladega Nights on my Media Center PC. The night ended when the movie ended and we said our goodbyes. It was a really hilarious movie and I’ll be reviewing it later.
