LeekSpin

I’m now addicted to a new flash video/song: LEEKSPIN DOT COM (from Decathanerd). The song is mesmerizing and has a light joyous hint to it. I’ve set up a mirror in my gallery.

The character you see spinning the leek is a female character from Bleach (the anime) named Orihime. She’s a bit of a klutz, but pretty cute:

After searching online for awhile, it turns out this song is called Ievan Polkka. This version was performed by Loituma in 1995. Both Wikipedia entries were started after this flash animation started spreading around (5/8/2006 and 4/27/2006 respectively). From Wikipedia:

The song is sung in Savo, the eastern dialect of the Finnish language, making it even more comical for Finns.

The intermezzo, which was used in the Flash movie, is just phonetically inspired gibberish with some Finnish words in it. It is not the part of the original song by Eino Kettunen, but rather is introduced by Loituma.

This song is best known from an a cappella performance by the Finnish quartet Loituma, first released in their album “Loituma” in 1995, re-released in album “Things of Beauty” in 1998.

The song, popular in Finland but previously unknown to the rest of the world, became better-known on the Internet since April/May 2006 because of a Flash cartoon.

A flash animation including this song has gained popularity on the internet. The cartoon consists of a 4-frame animation of an anime character twirling a leek to a 26-second loop from the song. Like many other such cartoons, it is set to loop continuously. Due to the infinity, the nonsensical sound of the singing, the simple energizing melody, the girl’s cheerful facial expression and the absurdity of spinning a leek the cartoon is considered very funny and has been spread by quite a number of people. Within a few days, tens of thousands of pages directed to the possible origin or had the file uploaded on their own webspace.

The “leekspin girl” is the BLEACH character Orihime Inoue, she spins the leek because she is telling her friend what she is planning to cook (usually something weird).

For the cartoon the second half of the fifth stanza (four lines) and the complete sixth stanza (eight lines) have been used; apparently they have no meaning and are therefore not included in the official lyrics. This is overlooked in most cases by the users who post the lyrics, often causing confusion.

It was originally made by an anonymous user of the image board 4chan and posted on the site’s flash board.

By now there are multiple videos and remixes of the song which have been inspired by the flash cartoon.

You can get the song in Loituma’s Things of Beauty album. You can listen to a preview of Ievan Polkka/Ieva’s Polka at Amazon.com.

Here you can view a video of Loituma Live (from Decathanerd) performing Ievan Polkka (Ieva’s Polka). An awesome thing about this group is they perform as a capella which always has this cool aspect to it. Here’s a mirror in case the original ever goes down.

Pandora Techno Recommendations

So through Pandora, I found some new songs that I really like:

Within Temptation – Jillian (I’d Give My Heart)

You can find this track on their The Silent Force album. You can watch them perform live in this video. The music has some ghostly/scary feeling to it, mixed with some electronica and of course the necessary high pitch female voice that makes all techno/trance songs better. I would say their style is pretty similar to Evanescence. You can hear a better quality version of it by watching this compilation with scenes from Serenity.

Reflekt – Need to Feel Loved

Another techno-y song with heavy beats and a high pitch female singer. You can watch their music video here. You can find this song in their Need to Feel Loved album.

Lasgo – Alone
Lasgo – Something

There’s 2 songs that were played by Lasgo that I liked. You can watch the music video of Alone or music video of Something. You can also listen to a preview of Alone or a preview of Something. You can find both tracks in her Some Things album. If those weren’t proper nouns, the few sentense I just type made no sense.

Era – Misere Mani

I was watching a music video and fell in love with this song: Era – Misere Mani. It’s just so beautiful. You can watch the music video here. You can find the song on Era, Vol. 2.

Lyrics (from Lyrics And Songs):

Pera menora
Infane lia
Doven anore
Misere mani

I will look in the sky
I will search for the sun
Who’ll tell us all about
Where we’ll be tomorrow

I will read all the books
On my knees countlessness
To tell you what about
The legends of the past

I will wait for the sun (Pera menora )
On the top of the world (Infane lia)
To tell you all about (Doven anore)
The beauty of the light (Misere mani)

If you look inside your soul
The world will open to your eyes
You will see…

Pera menora
Ifano mia
Misere mani
Doven adore
Ifane nia
Misere maneo
Doven adore
Ifane tia
Misera omane

I will stand in the rain
Hoping sun will come through
And I’ll see the colours of a misty rainbow
I’ll stay up in the night
Looking on shooting stars
To tell you how magic
Is the whole universe

If you look inside your soul
The world will open to your eyes
You will see…

Pera menora infano lia
Misere mani
Doven anore
Infane lia
Misere manio
Doven anore
Infane lia
Misero omane

Pera menora
Infane lia
You will see…
Doven anore
Misere mani

Ooooo…

I will wait for the sun
On the top of the world
To tell you all about
The beauty of the light
I’ll stay up in the night
Looking on shooting stars

Doven anore
Infane lia
Misere manio
Doven anore
Infane lia
Misero omane

I will look in the sky
I will search for the sun
I will wait for the sun
On the top of the world
I will look in the sky
Of the world, of the world, of the world.

BBQ at Tekman’s

So I went to sleep last night around 5:45am. I can’t beleive the sun was already out at that time. Well, maybe not the sun, but there was definitely light outside. I set my alarm to 12:20pm, but ended up hitting snooze till 1:30pm, haha. The BBQ was suppose to start at 1:30 and he lives all the way in North Bothell. Anyway, I get up and after forgetting which exit and ending up in Alderwood Mall, Lynwood, I finally arrive around 2:30 – 3pm.

The food was aplenty and the pork loins was actually really good and Angel’s brownies were *yummmm* SOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOD! Guy and Eric made beef ribs which I’m not sure if it was the sauce or beef ribs in general, but they sorta tasted weird, but in a good way. Maybe it was because it tasted pretty different from pork ribs.

We played poker some some time and I lost $10. My hands were terrible and the only awesome hands I did get, I ended up folding preflop. Guy I think was the big winner of making $9. Oh yah, I met a new friend of theirs, Matt, who seems to be interning for Microsoft this summer.

Derek called in the middle and we tried to convince him to come. When he did want to come, poker was already over, and we were playing board games. I was playing Ticket to Ride with several people, while the other group was playing Cities & Knights of Catan. It’s like a very complicated version of Settlers with knights and city upgrades and city walls and barbarians. I think they got annoyed I was asking so many questions about it, thought it looked like a lot of fun. I actually ended up placing 2nd after Guy with 107 points or something like that. Guy had ~120.

Afterwards, we were trying to decide what to do and ended up playing a game of HORSE (basketball). Wrexen ended up winning, but Guy had the most interesting moves.

Afterwards, we had another round of trying to decide what to do. We ended up playing more games after about an hour of brainstorming and half the group broke off to play Trivia Pursuit (a game which I totally suck at, my mind’s not made to remember random facts, hence why I have blog to jot down anything interesting so I can come back to it later). The other group (including myself) went to play Puerto Rico. Somehow I ended up winning, but I was just taking Guy’s and Xyon’s advice left and right.

The day was fun! I wonder if I have to go into work tomorrow… hmmmmmmm

Delta Goodrem – Innocent Eyes

So Pandora introduced me to a few new songs I really liked, a couple were from Delta Goodrem’s Innocent Eyes album. She’s also released another album called Mistaken Identity.

delta goodrem - innocent eyes album cover

Unfortunately iTunes doesn’t carry this album and I had to get it “through other means”. I think this might be a UK or Australian release since even Amazon.com says it’s an import CD.

Funny thing was I had actually downloaded a song by her (iTune’s weekly free music) Lost Without You (also on this album) and I had rated it 5 stars, but because she didn’t have any other music on iTunes, I didn’t really bother checking out what else she released. I guess the reason I liked her songs were because of the piano factor. Pop songs with pianos always get me, especially if they’re done well. Just like Vanessa Carlton’s – A Thousand Miles from Be Not Nobody. Once again, besides the common phrases, I don’t really any recollection what the song is about. I never really listen to words unless I’m focusing on the song, but if I like a tune, it could be talking about slitting my wrists or bashing my head (Pablo Francisco reference) and I wouldn’t really care.

Here are the songs from this album that I really liked:
Innocent Eyes – PreviewMusic Video
Lost Without You – PreviewMusic Video
Predictable – PreviewMusic Video

Pandora

Pandora created by the Music Genome Project.

Let’s see. What can I say about this. It’s a pretty neat project that lets you stream music throw a web browser (Flash) and doesn’t require any additional downloads. How does Pandora differ from the other programs like online radio or shoutcasts or even Rhapsody radio? Well, first of all, the customization is pretty neat. You input your favorite artist / songs and can customize as many stations as you want. Feel lke POP, select your POP station. Feel like Green Day, select your Green Day station. Feel like Emo, select your Emo station.

As the songs get played, you have the option to skip, but I think they limit you to skip 15 songs per hour (the only downside I see). This doesn’t mean the audio stops playing, just you can’t skip songs. You can still change stations. Also, when a song plays, you can rate it as something you like or something you don’t like and this directly affects what type of music gets played for you. It’s pretty smart. I haven’t finish customizing my station yet. I just started playing with it last night at work.

Apparently it works on the Squeezebox too!

梁漢文 – 纏綿遊戲

Kemis sings Edmund (from MsticAzn) – I can’t believe how good this guy is singing in Cantonese. That’s not to say he’s singing really good, but his enunciation of words is shockingly pretty accurate.

The song he’s singing is 纏綿遊戲 by 梁漢文 (Edmund Leung). You can download the mp3 here. Here are the lyrics:

Repeat * *

Unfortunately someone was auto-playing this song off their Xanga, so I’ve moved this song onto my Gallery, so it can’t be hot-linked.

永恆的記憶

So I’m watching this new Chinese TV Drama [仙劍奇俠傳] as I was saying a few days ago. It’s also been what’s keeping me away from writing my blog.

Anyway, the characters are ever so annoying, but I guess that’s why I love 24. (Imagines stabbing Chloe and that other female that started working under Chloe). Did you notice, that the guys in 24 are always so cool, and the females are always the ones getting into trouble and being annoying. I mean think about the main guys: Jack Bauer, Bill Buchanan, Curtis, Mike Novik, David Palmer, Logan, Heller, Christopher Henderson, Aaron Pierce (please forgive my misspellings of their names) vs the main females: Audrey, Chloe, Mrs. Logan, Kim (I’m so happy Kim is getting so little time this series), etc. Logan was getting a bit annoying, until you find out the truth. I do have to say that Chloe has gotten better, but just when I thought I’d give her another chance, she comes out and screws up again. Though Karen (that Homeland Security head of CTU now) may be a female worth respect.

Which reminds of the most retarded techno-babble I’ve heard in the last episode: “I can trace the physical location by looking at the binaries.” It’s been most painful phrase to my ear in awhile.

Anyway back to the topic. I wanted to share this mp3 from 仙劍奇俠傳 which I’d think you’d enjoy.

Download mp3: 永恆的記憶 (殺破狼演奏曲)

Do remember, I love soundtrack music that goes well along with the scene, especially music that can be powerful and stir up emotions.

世界の果てで

I finally got my hands on the soundtrack for 忍 Shinobi – Heart Under Blade. You can read my previous blog post on it. One of the tracks that I wanted to share is titled 世界の果てで (In the End of the World). For those that don’t know me, I’m really into soundtrack music; I really enjoyed the Batman Begins Soundtrack. Most works by Hans Zimmer I really enjoy.

Here’s the mp3: 世界の果てで (In the End of the Word).

This track doesn’t really compare to some of my favorite soundtracks, but it’s one of the more recent tracks I really enjoyed. When you watched the ending of the movie with this song playing in the background, it’s a masterpiece.
